Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Anti-wrinkle injections

Anti-wrinkle injections are performed using botulinum neurotoxin (abobotulinumtoxinA) from Galderma.

It is an acetylcholine release inhibitor and a neuromuscular blocking agent.

It temporarily prevents specific muscle movements that cause frown lines, forehead lines, wrinkles around the eyes (also known as ‘crow’s feet’ lines), axillary hyperhidrosis, etc.

In Australia there are 3 major brands of anti-wrinkle injections TGA approved for relaxation of frown lines or the glabellar muscles between your eyebrows. They are all derived from Clostridium Botulinum Toxin A, prescribed in small doses and are safe. Abobotulinumtoxin A is what we use at Lift Aesthetics. All botulinum toxins have the same mechanism of action: blocking the release of acetylcholine and preventing the muscles from contracting to maintain the aesthetic effect. Doses of Abobotulinumtoxin A is 2.5x more than the equivalent dose of onabotulinumtoxin A (B brand you often hear).
Therefore, treatment dosage for each patient per area varies according to factors such as age, skin quality, patient’s goals, etc. A comprehensive consultation before treatment is ideal, for a successful treatment.

It works by blocking the release of membrane-bound acetylcholine transmitter at the neuromuscular endplate resulting in temporary paralysis of the affected muscle.

The most common side effects are generalised weakness, eyelid drooping, fatigue (tiredness and/or asthenia), ‘flu-like’ symptoms, pain, bruising, swelling, and reddening at injection site.

Less commonly, injections may cause itching.

Rarely, skin rashes, including rashes at the injection site, and muscle weakness maybe experienced.

Although clinic visits can vary, the procedure generally take 10 to 20 minutes.

Although results vary, it starts working in 1-3 days and fully at 1-2 weeks

Results can vary but it generally lasts around 3-6 months.

Anti-wrinkle results & longevity

The average longevity of anti-wrinkle injections results is approximately 3 months. The longevity of the results depends on the client's anatomy, metabolism, the desired outcome, and the dose of the treatment used. A lower dose may be indicated for patients seeking a more natural appearance, but it should be noted that a lower dose will result in reduced longevity of the results.
